Contents of The IEE Wiring Regulations
As stated above, all domestic and industrial wiring must conform to the IEE Wiring Regulations 17th Edition which was published in January 2008.
The 17th Edition reflects many major changes over the 16th edition, to both the technical content and layout and structure of the publication. There are many changes, that electrician courses need to consider, but key changes include:
* A change which allows a socket outlet to be installed in bathrooms (depending on being 3m from the edge of a bath or shower and rcd protected)
* New ‘special locations’ are now covered in the IEE Wiring Regulations, including: floor and heating systems, exhibitions, photovoltaic (pv) power supply systems, marinas and fairgrounds / amusements parks.
* International standards have dictated the re-numbering and re-structuring of chapters throughout.
* The most obvious change is in the name - now the 17th Edition IEE Wiring regulations as opposed the the 16th edition. This identifies the major changes to the previous regulations which have been in place since 1991.
The new edition IEE Wiring Regs has a red cover as opposed to the brown of the old.
The new qualification to illustrate understanding of the new regulations is the City and Guilds 2382.
The City and Guilds 2382 courses cover the Certificate in the Requirements for Electrical Installations, otherwise known as the 17th Edition BS7671 IEE Wiring Regulations and are suitable for the full 2382-10 and also the update 2382-20 exams.
The IEE Wiring Regulations will be of obvious interest and necessary reading, to all those involved in the design, installation and maintenance of electric wiring in buildings. This would likely include electricians and electrical contractors, consultants, Local Authorities, surveyors and also architects. The publication should also be of interest to electrical and professional engineers, as well as students at university and Further Education and technical colleges.
The IEE Wiring Regulations publication can be purchased from electrical book stores.
